Abstract | Nowadays, career is characterized by more frequent transitions inside and outside the organizations. As such, the need for continuous learning, self-assessment, obtaining information and career management arose and the mentoring relationship is addressed as a valuable tool not only to meet these needs, but also for training highly qualified new personnel and for career advancement. For women, the mentoring relationship is even more relevant, as they face a myriad of challenges in a predominantly masculine environment as in the space science research filed. Mentoring includes career and psychosocial supports, and the mentor is defined as the one who offers high amounts of both assistances, as perceived by the mentee. Several studies have addressed the mentoring relationship from the point of view of the mentee. Few studies, on the other hand, investigate the mentors point of view. It is known that the mentor is an essential player for the existence of the mentoring relationship and its quality. Given the importance of mentoring relationship for women mentees and the lack of studies addressing the mentors point of view, this work addresses the mentors perception about mentoring women, in particular, in the space science research filed. This is a qualitative exploratory study, in which the data collection techniques are both a validated questionnaire instrument, in which mentors have been appointed by other female researchers and female graduate students, and semi-structured interviews with these mentors. The data analysis technique is content analysis. |
